Thiru Vilakku Poojai is a sacred Tamil Hindu ritual of lamp worship that symbolizes peace, blessings, and inner illumination. At Sri Murugan Temple, it is not only a ritual but also a spiritual gathering where devotees light lamps, chant hymns, and experience the temple aglow, affirming that even one flame lit with devotion can inspire hope and dispel fear.
The event integrates Archanai (devotional chanting), Annadhaanam (sacred food sharing), and Ubhayam (combined offerings), creating a holistic experience where worship, charity, and community come together.

Archanai is the devotional chanting of the Lord’s names and praises, led by the priest during Thiru Vilakku Poojai. These verses and namavalis invoke Murugan’s grace, focusing the mind and opening the heart to divine presence.
Devotees may offer personal or family Archanai, dedicating intentions to the Lord. Participating in or listening to the chants provides solace, clarity, and upliftment, connecting one inwardly to Murugan.
Annadhaanam, the sacred act of food offering, holds high spiritual value across traditions. During Thiru Vilakku Poojai, all attendees are served a simple vegetarian meal, symbolizing nourishment, generosity, and unity.
The sharing of prasadam reinforces equality and care, as it is open to everyone regardless of background. Feeding others is believed to purify the heart, bring merit, and remind devotees of the greater oneness of humanity.

Ubhayam, meaning “both” or “dual,” refers to combined offerings during Thiru Vilakku Poojai. It allows devotees to take part in multiple aspects—such as lamp offerings, Archanai, and Annadhaanam—thereby deepening their spiritual engagement.
By sponsoring lamps, contributing to food offerings, and participating in chants, devotees unite worship with service. This layered devotion cultivates humility, gratitude, and manifold blessings.
